What Makes a Corporate Headshot “Outdated”? Signs It’s Time for a Refresh

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

The signs a corporate headshot has gone outdated are easy to miss from the inside. Nobody schedules a reminder to update their LinkedIn photo.

The obvious signs

A different haircut, a beard grown or shaved, glasses added or removed, or a noticeable change in weight are the clearest signals a headshot no longer represents how someone actually looks. Meeting someone in person after seeing a headshot that no longer matches creates a small but real moment of confusion that undermines the professionalism the photo was meant to convey.

The less obvious signs

Photo quality itself dates faster than most people realize. A headshot taken on an older phone camera, or cropped awkwardly from a group photo, looks noticeably different in quality from current professional standards, even if the person’s appearance has not changed at all. Backgrounds and styling trends shift too. A headshot with a visibly outdated office backdrop or clothing style signals age even when the face has not changed.

The three-to-four-year rule

Independent of any visible change, a headshot older than three to four years is worth reviewing. This is not about vanity. It reflects how quickly professional photography standards, phone camera quality, and personal style shift, all of which make an old photo read as dated even without a dramatic personal change.

Why this matters more than it seems

A LinkedIn profile photo, a company website bio, and speaker or press materials are often the first visual impression a stranger forms. An outdated photo does not just look slightly off. It signals, correctly or not, that someone has not paid attention to their professional presence recently, which is a costlier signal than the ten minutes it takes to update it.
