The Biggest Menu Photo Mistake Brussels Restaurants Make (Hint: It’s Not the Lighting)

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

Restaurant owners worry about lighting, plating, and camera quality when they think about menu photos. The mistake that actually costs the most money is none of these.

The real problem: photos of dishes that no longer exist

A delivery app or Google listing still showing a dish that was quietly removed from the menu months ago is far more damaging than a mediocre photo of a dish that is actually available. A customer orders based on the photo, discovers the dish is gone, and the restaurant absorbs both a cancelled order and a one-star review that has nothing to do with food quality.

Why this happens so often

Menus change faster than photo libraries get updated. A seasonal dish gets swapped out, a supplier issue forces a substitution, or a dish simply underperforms and gets quietly dropped, while the photo stays live because updating it was never anyone’s specific job.

The fix is not more photography, it is a process

Assigning one person, even informally, to check that live photos match the current menu every time the menu changes closes this gap. This costs nothing beyond a few minutes of attention and prevents a problem that a bigger photography budget cannot fix on its own.

Where this shows up worst

Delivery apps are the highest-risk platform, since customers ordering through them cannot ask a server whether a dish is actually available before committing to an order. A mismatched photo there converts directly into a cancelled or disappointing order, which delivery platforms track and can quietly penalize in future ranking.

A photo of a dish that no longer exists is worse than no photo at all. It sets an expectation the restaurant cannot meet, and no amount of professional lighting fixes a promise the kitchen cannot keep.
