’I’m Not Photogenic’: Why That’s the Wrong Fear Before a Personal Photoshoot

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

“I’m not photogenic” is one of the most common things a photographer hears before a personal shoot even starts, and it is almost never actually about the face in question.

What the fear is really about

Being uncomfortable in front of a camera has little to do with how someone looks and much more to do with rarely being looked at deliberately. A personal photoshoot is one of the few moments in adult life where the entire point is sustained, undivided attention on one person, and that attention itself is what feels unfamiliar, not any specific facial feature.

The permission problem

Underneath “I’m not photogenic” usually sits a different, quieter statement: I am not sure I am allowed to take up this much space, or spend this much on myself, or be the subject of something this deliberate. That is not a photography problem. It is a permission problem, and no lens or lighting setup solves it directly.

What actually changes the outcome

A relaxed body reads as confident on camera regardless of the specific features involved. Tension, the thing that actually photographs badly, comes from self-consciousness, not from anything fixed about someone’s face. A photographer experienced with nervous clients spends the first few minutes of a session on exactly this: small talk, simple direction, low-stakes shots that let a person’s shoulders drop before anything that matters gets captured.

A different way to frame the decision

Instead of asking “am I photogenic enough for this,” a more useful question is “do I want a record of this version of myself, at this age, in this year.” Framed that way, the fear of not looking good enough becomes almost beside the point. Photogenic is not a fixed trait some people have and others lack. It is closer to a temporary state produced by feeling at ease, which is exactly what a good photographer’s job is to create.
