Is Brand Photography Worth It for a Small Business? What €180/Hour Actually Buys You

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

A small business owner staring at a 180€ per hour quote for brand content photography usually asks one question first: is this a one-time expense or something ongoing? The honest answer depends on what the photos need to do, and most owners have not actually decided that yet when they ask for a quote.

What the hourly rate covers

A typical brand content session includes the photographer’s time, basic styling guidance, and a set number of edited images ready for immediate use across social media, a website refresh, or marketing material. A two-hour session, the usual minimum, generally produces enough variety for a month or two of regular posting once mixed with existing footage.

One-time shoot or ongoing retainer?

This is the real decision hiding behind the price. A single session works for a specific need: a new product launch, a rebrand, a one-off campaign. A recurring arrangement, quarterly or monthly, works better for businesses that post regularly and need a steady stream of fresh content rather than a single burst that gets reused until it looks stale.

The math changes depending on which one applies. A single 400€ session stretched across a year of social posts costs less per post than it looks on paper. The same 400€ spent quarterly, four times a year, adds up to a real ongoing cost that needs to be weighed against what fresh content is actually worth to that specific business.

What actually determines ROI

Three things decide whether the spend pays off: whether the business has a clear idea of what it wants to say visually before the shoot, whether the photos get used consistently afterward instead of sitting in a folder, and whether the content matches where the audience actually looks. A restaurant needs different photos than a B2B consultancy, even at the same hourly rate.

The honest bottom line

180€ an hour is not expensive or cheap in isolation. It is expensive if the photos sit unused after one Instagram post. It is cheap if a single well-planned session produces content that gets reused across six months of marketing. The number that matters is not the hourly rate. It is how many times each photo actually gets used before it needs replacing.
