In-House vs. Freelance vs. Agency: Who Should Shoot Your Brussels Company’s Content?

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

In-house vs. freelance vs. agency photographer: every growing business eventually asks this question, usually right after realizing that ad-hoc phone photos are not going to carry the brand much further.

In-house photographer

Makes sense once content volume is high enough to justify a full salary: daily or weekly shoots, a large product catalog needing constant refresh, or a content calendar demanding more output than a freelancer can reasonably deliver. The tradeoff is a fixed cost regardless of how much is actually shot in a slower month, plus equipment and software overhead the company now owns.

Freelance photographer

The right fit for most small and mid-size Brussels businesses: pay per session, no fixed overhead, and the flexibility to bring in different specialists for different needs, a food photographer for menu shoots, a fashion photographer for a lookbook, rather than expecting one in-house generalist to cover every genre well.

Agency

Brings a full team, creative direction, a photographer, and often a strategist or editor working together, which suits larger campaigns needing coordinated messaging across multiple channels. This comes at a materially higher cost than an individual freelancer and usually makes sense only once content needs extend beyond simple photography into full campaign production.

The hybrid model

A growing number of Brussels businesses run a lean internal team for quick day-to-day content, a phone photo for a same-day Instagram story, paired with a freelancer or small agency for higher-production content that needs to last: the website, seasonal campaigns, printed materials. This avoids the fixed cost of in-house hire while still getting professional results where it actually matters.

The deciding question

The right choice comes down to volume and consistency needs, not budget alone. A business shooting content twice a year needs a freelancer. One needing fresh visuals every week is approaching the point where in-house, or at minimum a retainer arrangement, starts to make financial sense.
