What Makes a Good Author Portrait for a Book Cover or Column?

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

An author portrait has one requirement a corporate headshot does not: it has to survive being placed next to your own words, for years, without undercutting them. Here is what actually changes in the framing, and what does not.

Why a corporate headshot undercuts a byline

A photograph that looks like a company directory entry works against a byline — it says employee where the text says authority. An Author Portrait is made for the opposite job: it has to carry authority rather than friendliness, and it has to hold up next to a book jacket, a column header or a quote in the press, sometimes for years, sometimes standing beside a photograph taken a decade earlier by someone else.

What actually changes in the framing

In practice the difference is small and specific: slightly more contrast, a considered background rather than a neutral one, and framing with enough room that a designer cropping into it does not cut you at the chin. None of that requires a different session — it requires knowing before the session that this is where the image is going, so the shot list is built around a layout you do not control.

The asymmetry worth knowing

A portrait built for a byline works perfectly well on a company page, while a company headshot rarely works on a book jacket. If you need both a professional profile and an author image, this is the direction worth shooting — it covers the wider case, and a corporate headshot does not cover it back.

Send publisher specifications before the session, not after

Resolution, orientation and colour profile are all decided at capture. Retrofitting a publisher's specification from an existing file is exactly where quality gets lost, so anything a publisher requires in writing should arrive before the sitting, not once a deadline is already close.

Same session, different selection

This is the same ninety minutes as a personal branding sitting, with a different selection made at delivery. Booking it as a separate service would mean charging twice for one sitting, which is invisible at the time and obvious when the price list is read end to end. If you also speak at events or receive press requests, name that too at booking — the deliveries overlap almost completely and are worth preparing together.

Because it shares the same session as a personal branding sitting, there is no separate fee for the author direction: a realistic market rate for the full session, delivered with the crops above, typically falls between 350€ and 600€.
