Street & Editorial Fashion Photography in Brussels: What to Expect (and Do You Need Permission to Shoot in Public?)

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

“Editorial” gets thrown around in fashion photography until it stops meaning anything specific. For a brand booking a first street or editorial shoot, it helps to know exactly what the word implies before agreeing to a concept and a price.

What editorial actually means in practice

An editorial shoot tells a visual story rather than simply showing a product clearly. Where a catalog shot isolates a garment for clarity, an editorial image uses mood, location, and narrative to create a feeling around the clothing. This usually means more creative direction, more locations or setups within a single session, and a result meant for a lookbook, a campaign, or a brand’s social presence rather than a product page.

Do you need permission to shoot on the street?

In Brussels, casual street photography for personal or editorial use generally does not require a permit. Commercial shoots involving specific locations, equipment setups like lighting stands or reflectors that occupy public space, or larger crews change this. Certain locations, parks, historic sites, and specific squares, may require prior authorization from the local commune, particularly if the shoot uses equipment beyond a camera and a model. A photographer experienced in local editorial work usually knows which locations require this and handles the request in advance, which is worth confirming before booking.

How many outfits to prepare

A typical editorial or street fashion shoot covers five to six looks in a single session, allowing for a coherent visual story without exhausting the light, the model, or the day’s schedule. Bringing significantly more looks than this usually means some never make it into the final edit, since a strong editorial narrative favors depth over sheer volume.

What actually drives the cost

Street and editorial sessions in Brussels range from around 350€ for a shorter, single-location session to 1,200€ or more for a full-day, multi-location shoot with a larger creative team. Location scouting, any permits required, model booking, and the number of looks all move the number.

The clearest way to avoid a mismatch between expectation and result is a short conversation before booking: what story the shoot is meant to tell, where it will be used, and how many finished images the brand actually needs.
