Book as soon as the date and venue are confirmed — not once the rest of the planning is done.
Availability is the first thing to disappear, so treat the photographer booking like the venue booking: locked in early, before catering, before the final guest list, before anything else that feels more urgent in the moment. A short call or brief a few weeks before the event is enough for the preparation itself — the walkthrough, the shot list, the priority moments — but the date needs to be secured months, not weeks, ahead for anything with a fixed, unmovable date.
The earlier the date is locked, the more of the actual planning conversation you get to have — instead of a conversation about who’s still free.
