Beauty Photography for a Fashion Collection Launch: Who Provides What, and Will It Be Ready in Time?

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based fashion photographer

A beauty session inside a fashion launch has three unknowns that a private beauty shoot does not: who brings the makeup artist and model, whether the retouching window fits a launch date that will not move, and whether the brand's own reference photos are actually enough to work from.

This is not the private beauty session

A beauty portrait booked by a private client and a beauty session inside a fashion launch solve different problems, even when the lighting and the skin retouching look similar. The private version answers "how do I look" for one person. The fashion version answers "does this face and this styling read as our collection" for a brand, an agency and sometimes a magazine editor, which changes who needs to sign off before the images are considered finished.

Who brings the makeup artist and the model

Either can be arranged, or the brand brings its own — many collections already work with a makeup artist attached to the design team, and many use the same model booked for the wider lookbook or campaign. Whoever supplies them, each is named and billed at cost rather than folded into a single number, so there is no ambiguity about who is responsible for what on the day, and no hidden margin sitting inside someone else's fee.

Meeting a collection launch date

Beauty retouching takes several times longer than the shoot itself, because the images are viewed at full size and checked at the level of skin, texture and colour. That makes the launch date, not the shoot day, the actual constraint. Bringing the date to the first conversation lets the retouching window be planned backwards from it, rather than discovering three days before launch that the finishing schedule was never going to fit.

Why the brand's own reference photos are usually not enough

A mood board and a few product shots describe an intention, not a result achievable on skin under studio light. Reference images tell a photographer what a brand wants to feel like; they do not answer how a specific shade renders on a specific complexion, which is the actual technical question a beauty session for a launch has to solve. This is closely tied to the wider fashion photography planning for the collection: the same reference-and-brief discipline that keeps a lookbook on-brand applies here, just checked against skin rather than fabric.

What a beauty session for a launch typically costs

Because the retouching, not the shooting time, is what drives the price, a beauty session for a fashion or editorial launch in Brussels typically falls between 400€ and 1,200€, before makeup artist and model fees, which are arranged separately and billed at cost. Market estimate based on general Brussels beauty photography pricing patterns, not a fixed rate card.

The image that actually needs approval before a launch is not the one that looks flattering on a screen — it is the one that still holds up printed, cropped for a feed, and sitting next to the rest of the campaign. That is what the extra finishing time is buying.
