What to Wear to a Family Photoshoot in Brussels (And What to Avoid)

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

Coordinating outfits for a family photoshoot causes more pre-session stress than almost anything else, mostly because of one common misunderstanding: coordinated does not mean identical.

What actually works

A shared color palette, two or three complementary tones, rather than one single color for everyone, reads as coordinated without looking like a uniform. Muted or neutral tones, soft blues, creams, earthy greens, generally photograph better outdoors than bright primary colors, which can visually overpower a natural setting.

What to avoid

Busy patterns, large logos, or text on clothing distract from faces in a group photo and date quickly in a way that plain clothing does not. Head-to-toe matching, everyone in the exact same shade of the exact same item, tends to look staged rather than natural, and is one of the most common mistakes in family photoshoot outfit planning.

Practical considerations for kids specifically

Comfortable clothing matters more than a perfectly coordinated outfit for younger children. A child fidgeting in a scratchy or unfamiliar outfit shows up clearly in photos as visible discomfort, which undermines the coordinated look far more than a slightly mismatched color would.

Location-specific advice for Brussels

For a park or outdoor green space, earthy tones and soft neutrals complement the natural backdrop. For an urban or architectural setting, slightly bolder colors can work well against neutral stone or brick backgrounds without clashing.

The simplest rule that works

Pick one anchor color, then have each family member choose an outfit in a complementary shade or a neutral that pairs with it, rather than assigning identical outfits. This produces a photo that looks like a family who happens to look great together, not a matching set.
