How Far Along Should You Be for a Maternity Shoot? A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

Maternity photography timing gets asked about constantly, and the useful answer breaks down by trimester rather than a single number.

First trimester

Rarely used for a traditional maternity shoot, since there is usually little visible change yet. Some parents choose this window for an announcement-style session focused on early symbols of pregnancy rather than a visible belly, particularly if they want to document the full journey from the very beginning.

Second trimester

Around weeks 20-24, energy levels are often at their highest point of pregnancy, and a visible bump has developed without the physical strain of later months. This window suits parents who want a more active, less physically demanding session, though the belly shape at this stage is less pronounced than what most people picture for classic maternity photos.

Third trimester: the standard window

Weeks 28-36 are when most maternity photographers recommend booking, with 32-34 weeks as the frequently cited sweet spot. The belly has reached a fuller, more classically photogenic shape, while there is still enough physical comfort to hold poses for a reasonable session length.

Why not wait past 36 weeks

Beyond 36 weeks, physical comfort during a longer session becomes harder to manage, and there is a real, practical risk of early labor disrupting a booking made too close to the due date. Photographers experienced with maternity work generally recommend finalizing the session by week 36 at the latest.

The honest bottom line

There is no single correct week. The 32-34 week window balances belly shape and physical comfort best for most people, but the right time also depends on how a specific pregnancy is progressing and what kind of images a parent actually wants: an early announcement, a classic third-trimester belly shot, or documentation of the whole journey.
