Graduation Season in Brussels: When to Book Your Photographer (and Why Early Matters)

By Dmytro Derkach · Brussels-based commercial photographer

Graduation season in Brussels clusters heavily around June and July, when most universities hold their ceremonies within a few weeks of each other. This creates a real booking bottleneck that catches many students off guard.

Why photographers get booked out fast

With most graduations concentrated in a short window, photographers specializing in graduation sessions have limited availability across those specific weeks. Waiting until a graduation date is confirmed to start looking often means the best-reviewed photographers are already fully booked for the relevant dates.

The realistic booking timeline

Reaching out four to six weeks before the ceremony gives reasonable odds of booking a preferred photographer at a convenient time of day. Waiting until one to two weeks before graduation season significantly narrows the options, often leaving only less experienced or less available photographers to choose from.

Why timing within the day also matters

Ceremony days are long and unpredictable, with graduates cycling through official photos, family gatherings, and the ceremony itself. Booking a specific time slot for a separate photoshoot, rather than assuming it can happen “sometime after the ceremony,” avoids the scramble of coordinating a shoot around an already chaotic day.

What early booking actually buys

Beyond simply securing a photographer, booking early allows time for a proper consultation: discussing locations around campus or the city, outfit planning for what shows beneath the gown, and coordinating family members who want to be included in some shots.

Graduation happens once. A photographer booked in a rush, from whoever still has availability two weeks before the ceremony, is a real compromise on a day that does not get a second chance.
